Prayer is a very old term which actually means asking your God or Guru for some or the other kind of blessing, favor or any other object of one’s desire. Almost everyone in this world has heard of the term and uses it in some way or the other at some point in the life.
Most humans misuse the power of prayer and mostly prayer is driven by fear or selfishness. There are very few people in this world who pray on a daily basis and in the right manner, asking for the right things. Let us look at a few examples : One person prays ‘God, please make me pass this exam, please do this for me and I will start going to the temple/church/mosque more regularly from now onward.’ Another person prays ‘O Lord, if you really exist, make me win the lottery this time, if do this for me, I promise to be more loyal.’ A third person prays ‘Dear God, I have never asked you for anything major in life, please get me out of this mess alright and I promise to be more grateful for everything I have.’ Now let us analyze these three prayers. All three of these are conditional prayers- if you do this for me, I will try and return the favor (there are no guarantees of this, even if your prayers are answered, you may or may not repay for them). All three are selfish in nature- I really want this now, please make it happen. All three have no sense of gratitude in them. You do not show that you are thankful for any good things happening in your life.
Consider for a second, that you have been given the role of a magician who can perform any miracles but the catch is that you can only use your powers to help others in need. You have an inbox full of requests from people, all of whom are justifiably needy, a pile that is constantly increasing. First of all, how would you decide who is right and who is wrong and secondly how much would you really enjoy having this job and how long do you think will you be able to last at it. Not long enough!!
It is impossible that one entity, one person can ever successfully perform this task. Now let us see what the right ways to pray are:
First of all, who do you pray to? The one and only super power whose existence can be proven is Nature. You pray to the powers of Nature, the forces of good in nature.
What do you pray for? Anything that you ask for must not just be for material gains, there should be a positive reason for your prayer to be answered. It should not be selfish in nature. It is wrong to say ‘Please make me pass this test’ even if you are not prepared for it. It is, however, okay to pray ‘ Please help me to perform to the best of my ability so that I may be able to fully utilize the preparation I have done’. Miracles do not happen in Nature. Nature is governed by certain laws. You cannot sit for an exam without any preparation and expect to pass just because you prayed. Not only this is wrong, but impossible too, according to the laws governing Nature. If that was the case, then anyone could become a doctor, engineer, pilot, astronaut, just by sitting for the exam and having no knowledge. How would you like to be treated by such a doctor or flown by such a pilot.
Now, how should you pray? You prayer should not be conditional in nature. Do not say ‘If you make this happen, I promise to—‘. Once more be clear that miracles do not occur. Do not test the powers of Nature. If there are forces of good that can make your wishes come true, there are equal and opposite forces of bad, that can work against you. Make certain that each time you sit or kneel to pray, first and foremost requirement is to realize the importance and enormity of the powers of Nature, bow down to them, respect them and then humbly thank them for all the goodness in your life. For making the life richer and better, not only in materialistic aspect but also to make you a better person. It brings in a more positive environment around you and benefits not just you, but others as well in some way. Prayer should be something like this:
To all the supreme powers of good in Nature:
I humbly bow my head and ask for forgiveness,
for any wrongs I may have committed,
Please guide me with the right way to repent,
I gratefully thank you for all the good in my life,
and pray that I may spread this goodness around.
I graciously pray for courage to face my weaknesses
and turn them into strengths that work for my benefit.
Prayer is a very powerful tool given to mankind. Do not allow your fears and selfishness drive it, instead realize its powers and use them in the right way to benefit you and the world around you.
